The mathematical calculation is as follows: 12 feet of extension divided by 4 equals 3 feet from the wall. As another example, the bottom of a ladder that extends 20 feet (divided by 4) should be placed 5 feet from the surface of the wall.
If the top of the extension ladder will extend beyond the wall, for example to reach a platform area such as the roof, the extension ladder should extend at least 3 feet beyond the platform. This will provide you with a safe area for you to grab while walking from the elongated ladder to the roof terrace.
